What is the Birthstone for November?

A birthstone is another name for a gemstone that represents the month a person is born in. Legends around gemstones talk of spiritual meanings and healing or protective powers for each birthstone, and so it is believed that wearing your birthstone jewellery during the chosen month increases the powers of that stone. And so one may ask, what is the birthstone for November?

Citrine is the modern choice of birthstone for the month of November and is often a favourite gemstone due to the rich earthy tones available.

More traditionally Yellow Topaz was the November birthstone.

What is Citrine?

Citrine is the rich yellow and orange form of the mineral Quartz and takes its vibrant colour from small amounts of iron present.

The rich, warming colours of Citrine are thought to symbolise feelings of joy and happiness bringing an abundance of both to the wearer by radiating warm energy. Citrine is said to calm and soothe making it the ideal gemstone for the dark autumn months by lifting the spirits and balancing moods.

The wide array of hues available means you can easily customise your individual style and personality to your choice of November birthstone jewellery. The rich tones of the Citrine birthstone offer a wide choice of jewellery options, from birthstone pendants to birthstone rings.

The history of Citrine

Citrine has been a much loved gem since ancient times, first being recorded as early as 1385. However as the colour closely resembles Yellow Topaz, the two stones share a history of misidentification.

Citrine can be found in many countries worldwide, including Brazil, Madagascar, France, Russia, Britain and the United States.

In ancient times Citrine was believed to soothe anger, calm tempers and manifest joy and prosperity. To channel these powers ancient Egyptians would use Citrine gemstones as talismans, the ancient Greeks carved them into iconic images and Roman priests used Citrine to adorn their rings.

Once Mineralogists were able to distinguish Citrine from Yellow Topaz it fast became popular in jewellery remaining one of the most popular and affordable gemstones.

Caring for your Citrine birthstone jewellery

    • Always avoid chemicals: Although Citrine birthstones are fairly hard and durable they can react to exposure with any harsh chemicals such as bleach, household cleaners, make up, perfume and hand sanitiser. Try to avoid your jewellery coming into contact with these as they can damage the surface of the stone and tarnish the silver.
    • Clean gently with soapy water: Occasionally you may need to gently clean your Citrine jewellery so always be sure to use a soft cloth or brush while holding the jewellery in warm soapy water. Gently brush the gemstone to detach any residue or dirt that may be trapped, then rinse well with water and pat dry with a clean, soft cloth.
    • Storing your jewellery: Unfortunately silver and gemstones tarnish when in contact with oxygen and this is called oxidisation. Whenever you are not wearing your birthstone jewellery try to store it in a soft, natural material pouch or a lined jewellery box. Try to keep your jewellery pieces separate as gemstones can easily scratch each other.
    • Avoid extreme temperature changes: Any sudden excessive change in temperature can damage your Citrine birthstone. If possible avoid exposing your birthstone jewellery to any extreme temperature, for example, direct sunlight, hot water or cold conditions.

If you follow this easy-care advice then you will be able to  enjoy the natural beauty of your November birthstone jewellery for decades to come.
